What healthy snacks can you eat when you have the craving for something sweet?
It is normal, that occasionally we have a craving for something sweet and you don’t need to worry about it…unless you have this craving every day, after every meal, during the night, when you want to eat something sweet instead of a normal meal…
If that’s the case, you should worry a little, but the problem depends on many factors so you need to analyze, why this craving occurs. Maybe you work too much and you are exhausted? Then your mind needs to get an extra dose of glucose. Maybe you suffer from insulin resistance or postprandial (reactive) hypoglycemia and you need to check your insulin and glucose levels? The reactive hypoglycemia usually occurs within 2 – 5 hours after a meal. Manifestation this feeling can be the following:
- anxiety
- jitters
- palpitations
- dizziness
- tremor
- weakness
- drenching
- perspiration
- starving
- etc.
These symptoms usually occur when your blood sugar drops below 70 mg/dl but sometimes they may not occur only until the blood sugar is lower than 50 mg/dl.
If you think that you may suffer from this kind of problem, I recommend you to visit your doctor first and make a blood test. Subsequently, you may decide to visit a dietitian who will help you with your diet.
However, if your diet is healthy and you think that, occasionally, you have a “normal” sweetness craving, check out my healthy sweet snacks recommendations! Here are some suggestions:
Soy or almond milk cacao
It is a very simple drink. All you have to do is cook a cacao in a traditional way. Yes, this traditional cacao powder, not an instant rubbish…!
Instant powders usually include added sugar, so be aware!
While cooking your cacao, you can add some xylitol or spices if you want (for example chili powder, cinnamon or nutmeg).
I just love this drink!
Fruits with crumble
How do I make this dessert?
Take chickpeas flour (about 100 g), canola oil (about 80 ml) and a bit of xylitol (3-4 tablespoons). You can add some spices, such as pinch of salt, cinnamon or cloves. Mix everything in a bowl. Next, take your favorite fruits and cut them to smaller pieces (you can use frozen fruits as well). Put fruits in a baking form and cover with chickpeas crumble. Then place it in the oven and bake in 175 degrees Celsius for about 45 minutes.
That’s it.
Delicious and quick.
Homemade ice cream
Unbelievable how quick and simple this recipe is! All you have to do is mix the frozen fruits. My favorite mix is bananas with strawberries.
Cherries with plant yogurt or chia pudding
You can put them into yogurt and add some nuts. You can also make a chia seed pudding with cherries. This pudding is very easy to make. All you have to do is mix chia seeds with yogurt (or plant milk). Then place it in the fridge for few hours. Take 2-3 tablespoons of chia for 1 cup of milk or yogurt. Be sure to mix these seeds well for few minutes (few times within 10 minutes), otherwise you will get chia-lumps.
